Behind the Science of Life
The United States economy and the nation’s standing in the global marketplace depend increasingly on science and innovation. Yet the country faces dramatic challenges to its competitive advantage in life sciences innovation: a lack of K-12 student preparation in science and mathematics (California’s student performance continues to rank in the bottom quartile in science and the third quartile in math), limited undergraduate interest in science majors, and significant student attrition among science undergraduate and graduate students.

The BayBio Behind the Science of Life campaign mobilizes professionals, educators, organizations and companies who share a commitment to making the life sciences accessible to every citizen in Northern California. The multi-media initiative includes in-school services, a platform for strategic community engagement, and television spotlights that together aim to elevate support for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education throughout the region.

California’s life sciences companies lead the world in developing and delivering new diagnostics, devices and therapies for patients worldwide. We invite you to explore our work.

Technology and Innovation

Life sciences products may reduce water and energy use by as much as 50 percent.

Tomorrow’s biofuels will be made from algae, landfill, and forest waste, and will reduce green house gases by 90 percent compared to fossil fuels.

HIV therapeutics have added over 30 years to the lives of Californians with HIV.

Only 50 years ago, childhood acute lymphatic leukemia (ALL) was considered to be universally fatal. However, in perhaps one of the greatest success stories in pediatric oncology, long-term, event-free survival rates are currently almost 80 percent.

Cures for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s are now on the horizon, and will likely be developed by California companies.

California companies donate nearly $1 billion in products to patients each year.

Northern California companies deliver more than 2 billion doses to patients each year in the U.S. alone.

More than 400,000 people around the world have received Northern California- developed HIV therapies, regardless of income or location.

R&D as an Economic Driver

271,000 people are employed by life sciences companies in California alone.

One third of the entire U.S. life sciences industry is based in Northern California.

There are more than 900 treatments in the California research pipeline.

There are 233 treatments in Stage III clinical trials, moving towards approval and manufacturing. This is arguably the most critical point in the R&D pipeline for sustained and continued support.

California receives more than $3 billion in National Institutes of Health research funding.

California biotechnology companies account for 15 percent of total US venture capital investment.

Improve Science Education
Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education are a cornerstone to life sciences research and development. Yet, here in Northern California we need to improve our STEM curriculum and educate the next generation of life science professionals.

Only 1 percent of US high school students pursue their PhDs in science.

California 8th graders ranked 48th out of 50 states in science achievement.

More and more science classrooms are closed each year because funding is not available.

Without the basics of science education in the classroom, the economic engine of Northern California cannot drive us forward.

To improve science education, the BayBio Institute created Bio-Community.org, a web-based platform connecting life science volunteers to local students and teachers. Bio-Community.org provides a growing network of resources to improve science education in cash strapped and under resourced classrooms. Teachers receive assistance from life science volunteers to help in the classroom and to help with curriculum. Teachers and students can tour participating biotechnology companies and gain increased awareness of what it is like to work in that environment. Students of these teachers are benefiting from their teacher’s increased enthusiasm and awareness of the industry.

About Behind the Science of Life
Behind the Science of Life was developed by BayBio, Northern California’s association of life sciences companies, to improve the public’s awareness of the life sciences contribution to the regional community. Supporters are engaged to share with teachers and educators information about Bio-Community.org, a platform which connects life science volunteers with local students and teachers.
